LESSON TYPES

Piano lessons will generally be weekly and an hour long. However, to suit your needs and depending on the availability of time slots, fortnightly lessons may be requested.

All students will receive a detailed written report at the end of the lesson. This report may also be requested as a soft copy. The report will cover all activates done during the lesson and a constructive critical commentary for all repertoire performed. This report will have all the needed guidelines for the student to practice at home.

The Piano lesson will cover technique and repertoire.

While most repertoires taught will be in the idiom of western classical music, equal emphasis will be given to modern music, jazz, improvisation, and composition.

Students may give exams conducted by Trinity College, London (TCL), the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), and the London College of Music (LCM).

Theory Lessons

These may be a group or private lessons, and will usually be an hour long.

Theory Rudiments

Theory Rudiments comprise basic objective music theory elements related to pitch, chords, intervals, meter, keys, rhythm, and form. For students who do not have a theory background up to Grade 5 (TCL, ABRSM, or LCM), Theory Rudiments are compulsory for taking Piano lessons and Composition lessons.

Students will have a choice of different entry modules depending on their musical tastes. These will range from Classical to Jazz and Popular. By the end of studying Theory Rudiments, the student will have attained a level equivalent to Grade 5 Theory under the TCL, ABRSM, and LCM syllabi.

Depending on the grasp of the student, the study of Theory Rudiments can take anywhere from 4 months to 3 years.

Students may wish to appear for the Grade 5 theory examinations held by TCL, ABRSM, or LCM at the end of their rudimentary study.

Intermediate Classical Harmony

Intermediate Classical Harmony is the study of the grammar of music that composers used in the Common Practice period (1650-1900). By the end of studying Intermediate Classical Harmony, students will have attained a level equivalent to Grade 8 Theory (TCL, ABRSM, and LCM). Rudiments knowledge or Grade 5 Theory is a prerequisite for this module. Intermediate Classical Harmony is compulsory for students learning Intermediate and Advanced Piano and Composition in the Classical idiom.

Students may give the Grade 6 or 7 theory exams while doing this module as and when they have attained the required level of knowledge. At the end of this module, the student may give the Grade 8 theory examination.

Advanced Classical Harmony

Advanced Classical Harmony is an extension of Intermediate Classical Harmony. Be the end of the Advanced Classical Harmony course, students will have attained the theory levels of AMusTCL and LMusTCL. Students may give AMusTCL and LMusTCL after the completion of this module.

Advanced Classical Harmony is compulsory for students doing Composition in the Classical-Idiom.

Advanced Jazz Harmony

Jazz Harmony has evolved from Classical harmony with the influence of music from the West African diaspora and led itself to establish its own school of music. Rudiments knowledge or Grade 5 Theory is a prerequisite for this module. Composition Students are recommended to do this module. This module is compulsory for students learning Jazz performance and Improvisation.

Aural skills

These are skills that relate to identifying basic elements of music, intervals, chords, cadences, rhythm, melody, and form. Melodic dictation is also a part of Aural Skills.

Aural tests are a part of the supplementary tests of the Graded Examinations of TCL, ABRSM, and LCM.

Sight Reading

Sight-reading will be a part of the piano lesson.

Sight Reading is a part of the supplementary tests of the Graded Examinations of TCL, ABRSM, and LCM.
